The Gabby Krause Foundation Swim-a-Thon
The Gabby Krause Foundation, through their Bags of Fun program, delivers bags of educational and interactive toys to children fighting cancer and other long-term illnesses. This organization is very near and dear to the Sundance Sailfish community. Here is why:
Gabby Krause swam at Sundance Hills and lived in the neighborhood. She was diagnosed with a brain tumor right before her fifth birthday, but even through treatments she still came to swim practice. The Sundance swim team allowed her to have some "normal summer kid fun." Gabby loved purple, Coke-flavored Slurpees, and swimming. She sang, danced, laughed, and swam her way through treatments. Gabby passed away in September 2004 at the age of six after her courageous nineteen-month battle with brain cancer.
It is in her memory that The Gabby Krause Foundation was started. Gabby had a "bag of fun," a pack filled with toys and fun activities that kept her busy and happy during long hospital visits. To the delight of other patients, she always shared her games and toys. It was Gabby’s wish that every child at the hospital could have his/her very own "bag of fun."
The Gabby Krause Foundation was started because of Gabby’s special wish. The signature project, Bags of Fun, was created in the spirit of Gabby’s original bag of toys and fun activities that kept her happy and silly during hours of treatment.
The Gabby Krause Foundation delivers Bags of Fun to children fighting cancer and other long-term illnesses. Bags of Fun are filled with educational, interactive toys to brighten these kids' days with laughter, love, and joy. The Gabby Krause Foundation has given thousands of Bags of Fun to sick children throughout the Denver metro area and has begun expanding nationally. Each Bag of Fun backpack is valued at more than $400 each.
Each year, the Sundance Hills Swim Team hosts a swim-a-thon in which swimmers will swim laps during their regular practice times to benefit The Gabby Krause Foundation and Bags of Fun. Swimmers can set a goal for themselves and ask for donations and encouragement to help them meet their goals. Donations can be based on the swimmer's personal goal or a flat amount. The suggested donation is $1 per lap, but the goal is for Sundance to have 100% participation, even if it's just $1. It is a fun-filled, meaningful event.
We encourage every swimmer to come and share in this wonderful experience. MUDSKIPPERS TOO!!!! Parents, come encourage and cheer on swimmers.
