Sailfish SCOOP - 05.21.2023
HELLO SAILFISH!
Who is ready for the second week of practice?! It looks like it’s going to be great weather and less hazy, so be on lookout for some speedy Sailfish at the corner of E. Powers and S. Galena.
Here is your SCOOP for this beautiful Sunday evening.
(Brand new stuff in each SCOOP will have BLUE headings, for those of you who memorized what we sent in previous SCOOPS…)
A NOTE FROM YOUR HEAD COACH
Hi Sailfish!
Congrats on a great first week of practice! For those of you who don’t know, I’ve been finishing up my finals but will be back on Monday. I’m so excited to begin the season with you all!
Here are a couple things to keep in mind as we head into our second week of practice:
- If your swimmer has fins, please have them bring them to practice every day. I recommend having them labeled with their name so that they don’t get mixed up.
- Private lessons will be starting in one week! Coaches and volunteer coaches will be holding private lessons all summer and we are so excited for this extra one on one time with our swimmers to improve technique and confidence in the water. Our contact info can be found on the Sailfish website.
- Have your swimmer begin thinking about what they would like to swim in the fun meet. This is a fun, low-stakes way for swimmers to gain confidence in a meet environment. If your swimmer wants to try a new event or practice one they’re nervous about, this is a great time to do it!
- If you have any questions, please email me.
Coach Avery

9-10 and 11-12 swimmers may come at either 5 pm or 6 pm, whichever works best with your schedule.
SAFETY REMINDERS FOR PRACTICE
- Swimmers are only supervised by the swim team coaches during their age designated practice times. Sailfish coaches are busy on deck with swimmers in the water.
- Swimmers are not permitted to stay at the pool unsupervised outside of practice times.
- Please remind your children that the children’s pool and dive well are closed during practice. Swimmers are able to swim in the dive well under the supervision and with the permission of their coach. The children’s pool opens at 10:30 am each day and WILL be supervised by a lifeguard at that time. This pool is only for children ages 9 and under, and parents or a guardian MUST be present for children to enter this area when it opens.
- There are no lifeguards on duty during swim practice. Coaches serve in this capacity for swimmers who are practicing.
- If your swimmer rides their bike or scooter to practice, please remind them to use the crosswalks.
- Please remind teen drivers to drive carefully around the pool and to attend to speed hump and stop signs. In a recent Greenwood Village police survey, we learned that over 80% of drivers run through the stop sign at Powers and Galena - creating a significant safety issue for pedestrians near our pool. The Greenwood Village Police are conducting targeted enforcement at this intersection and we expect that they will be around often during our practice times.
TEAM EMAILS FOR 11-18 YEAR OLDS
Would you like your 11-18 year old swimmer to receive team emails? Several of you have requested, and we are happy to oblige. This could be particularly useful if you have an older kid who needs to know when practices are cancelled for weather, etc. Please complete this form, and we will add your swimmer’s email to our lists.

FUN MEET
Save the Date! We are hosting a FUN MEET this year on Thursday, June 1 from 6-8pm for ALL swimmers and families at the Sundance Pool. It feels so good to be home and this FUN Sailfish event is just like a real meet with races but not competitive, it's all for fun! We will be hosting a fundraiser alongside this meet at Mod Market from 11am-9pm to bring up to the pool while we swim and watch our Sailfish swim. We are encouraging everyone to make it to this get-together, practice a meet, and all that goes with it--timers, heating, cheering and spending time together! We are excited to see everyone there! Save the Date!
VOLUNTEER SHIFT SIGN UP
Please sign up for all volunteer shifts ASAP. We have added additional volunteer shifts across the season. Families who have not signed up for the 6 required points by May 22 will be charged the volunteer opt out fee. Please reach out to Lisa or Tara with questions or concerns.
HELP US FIND MORE SWIMMERS
We still have plenty of room for more swimmers and there is still plenty of time to sign up for the season. Please help up spread the word about our AWESOME team. YOU are the best recruiting tool that we have.
CALLING ALL BIG KIDS
The Big Kids program is back this year and better than ever! We have a ton of fun events planned, and new ways to communicate events so you and your Big Kid can stay in the loop. If you have a Sailfish swimmer that is a rising 7th grader or older, please take the following steps:
- Check out our new Big Kids page! This will be updated as we add events throughout the year.
- Fill out this Google form! This will ensure that both you and your Big Kids have a finger on the pulse of all things Big Kids this year.
- Order merch! Check out the Big Kid only merch available on the Big Kids page.
- Talk up the Big Kids program with your kids. We know they'll have a great time hanging with their friends outside the pool and we want to get them excited about it!
That’s the news for this edition of the Sailfish SCOOP.
Life is better when you are swimming!
